RBMA LECTURE: ERYKAH BADU (Madrid 2011) by Noggy
November 3, 2011, 8:09 pm
Filed under: interview | Tags: ,

Erykah Badu needs little introduction. Her seminal works like ‘Baduizm’ and the ‘New AmErykah’ series have successively upped the ante in terms of what can be done within the soul spectrum. Erykah fuses cosmic b-girl bravado with the forward-thinking sounds of producers like the Soulquarians, Madlib, and more recently, Academy grad Flying Lotus, to create a sonically varied body of work – selling millions of albums in the process. She also heads up her own record label, Control FreaQ, and has even been caught on the ones and twos recently, under her moniker DJ Lo Down Loretta Brown. Watch her tell the story to Eothen ‘Egon’ Alapatt at the Red Bull Music Academy 2011 in Madrid.

AMEL LARRIEUX INTERVIEW @ S.O.B.S by Noggy

I’m excited to drop the following interview on all of you … simply because an Amel Larrieux interview is a novelty there are not many floating on the net and she actually has some exciting news. Apart from her upcoming fifth studio album by the name of “Ice Cream Every Day” there is something else she’s working on. Curious?! … just stream the vid below!!

In March 2009, Larrieux released the songs “Orange Glow” and “Don’t Let Me Down” from her forth coming album,”Ice Cream Every Day“, to iTunes and other online music stores. I obviously missed all of that otherwise y’all would have been informed on that by now. But I’ve decided that there is one song I probably will have on repeat by the time the album drops cause “You’re the Shhh” just sounds like a pick up line I have to engrave into my mental Rolodex . I hope I can make it sound as hot as when Amel sings it.

Best thing about bandcamp you can always check out the content before you download and in our case check it out before you blog. Kinda like artist who are bold enough to experiment and especially female MC’s.  ‘Nikki’  had the following to add to her project….

For the past few months I’ve been working to the sounds of some of Brainfeeder’s greatest masterminds. Nikki NTU vs. Brainfeeder “Medulla Dinner” is a seven track EP featuring production from Ras G, Samiyam, Teebs, and Flying Lotus. It was definitely a challenge to take on such amazing music so I wanted to go where I haven’t gone both lyrically and conceptually. A big thank you to King Texas, MeLo-X, Timothy Jack, Visionary Dary and the whole Galax team for the support and great work. I hope you enjoy!

The 14th of May is a big day….simply because it’s Strange Fruits’  fifth year anniversary and of course we are going to do what we do best…invite you over to club Watt to party with us!!

Naturally we have a sweet line up which includes Spec Boogie (live), Peanut Butter Wolf (Stones Throw) & Theo Parrish (Sound Signature)…We know a lot of you out there already pencilled this gig in and blocked whatever needed to be blocked to be there…if this is you…you can skip this post. This post is for those of you who would probably really like to be there after you get what you are missing out on…so here we go…

Theo Parrish is a techno/house musician based in Detroit, Michigan. He was born in Washington, DC. He grew up in Chicago, Illinois listening to jazz musicians like Miles Davis, Nina Simone, and George Gershwin. He graduated from the Chicago Academy of the Arts and went to study at the Kansas City Art Institute. While at KCAI, he concentrated on sound sculptures, creating sonic pieces by combining live instruments, human voices, and looped recordings. He received his BFA in 1994 and moved to Michigan to focus on musical projects.

He has recorded music under his own name as well as with Rick Wilhite, Marcellus Malik Pittman and Kenneth Dixon Jr as 3 Chairs. He also puts out releases on his record label, Sound Signature. Another aspect of Theo Parrish’s productions are his re-edits, often of old disco, funk or soul records. He is almost as renowned for his expansive and genre-hopping live DJ sets as his productions.

This post is for those of you who would really like to be there after you get what you are missing out on…so here we go…

Chris Manak, aka Peanut Butter Wolf, is a DJ, hip-hop producer and the founder of hip-hop label Stones Throw Records.

He took on the name Peanut Butter Wolf in the late-80s when he realized that, in an odd turn of events, a girlfriend’s youngest brother feared the “peanut butter wolf monster” more than death itself. Wolf and his more conventionally-named counterpart, Charizma, began recording in 1989 when the two were still teenagers. Within three years, the duo signed a contract with Hollywood Basic (Disney) alongside label mates Organized Konfusion and DJ Shadow.  When Charizma tragically lost his life in December of 1993. Stunned, Wolf temporarily gave up on music.

In 1996, Peanut Butter Wolf founded Stones Throw Records. Charizma’s posthumous “My World Premiere” was the single to launch the label. A few highlights in the beginning were the songs “Unassisted” by Rasco, Super Duck Breaks LP by DJ Babu, and hip hop 7” series.

Lately, PB Wolf has moved away from producing (save the odd remix or compilation track) to build the Stones Throw label and to travel as a DJ to Europe, Japan, Australia, Canada, and across the US.
