Mary Anne Hobbs is to step down from her BBC Radio 1 show championing new dance music after 14 years.
The DJ is taking up a teaching role at the University of Sheffield’s Union of Students radio station, TV station and newspaper. She said it was an “emotional” decision but she was bowing out “at the very top of my game”.
Hobbs, 46, said: “The great freedom the BBC has given me as a broadcaster has allowed me to help break so many confrontational artists as diverse as Slipknot and Skream, and of course, the whole genre of dubstep in recent times.
“My current Experimental show is in peak condition, it’s never been stronger and although it’s a very emotional decision to leave the show that I love so much, it’s also an optimum moment to bow out at the very top of my game.”
The last of Hobbs’s weekly shows will be broadcast on Thursday September 9 from 2am to 4am. BBC Radio 1 will announce plans for the slot in the coming weeks. The station said the new programme will follow the tradition of providing “distinctive specialist music content”. Hobbs will continue to DJ live, work in film and curate at the Sonar festival in Barcelona.
Ben Cooper, deputy controller of BBC Radio 1, said: “Mary Anne’s passion and energy for her music means she has been an amazing ambassador for Radio 1 in the UK and around the world.
“We all wish her all the very best for the future.”

One of the ortist that keeps showing up in our playlist is Ahu (pictured above) . The young Turkish singer, full name Ahu Kelesoglu, has already built up quite a reputation for her collaborations with Flying Lotus, Mr Beatnick and others – it was she, under the name Dolly, who contributed the sublime, dusky vocal to Flying Lotus’s ‘Robertaflack’. At the moment she is focussing on her solo work inspired by house, techno, the golden age of jazz singers, European movie soundtracks and much else besides, we reckon Ahu’s really going to be one to watch in the months and years that lie ahead. This wonderful mixtape for FACT includes music from Brigitte Bardot, Daedalus and Matthew Herbert and two unreleased tracks by Portishead’s Beth Gibbons. Listen, read and enjoy.

Flying Lotus’ Cosmogramma Tracklist
INSIDE THE COSMIC CRIB OF FLYING LOTUS (VIDEO)

The Tropics EP is something quite different and something quite special. The seven track mini album is the product of an 18 month collaboration between LA based beatmaker Teebs and UK producer Jackhigh, and is already attracting serious praise.
Back in the day, London based Jackhigh had already been featured as 17 year old on the genre-defining Beatnicks EPs from Up My Alley label and started to get involved in collaborations, producing remixes and so on, while an equally young Teebs found himself living in LA with Flying Lotus and Samiyam for flatmates. As Teebs remembers it, Jackhigh put a snippet of a tune he liked on Myspace and Teebs asked him to send it over. “I flipped it, sent it back. He added strings, sent it back to me again. I flipped it again” And so it continued, in a slow organic way, loops becoming processed and degraded and altered and added to, and tracks slowly emerging.
Over time a total of seven tunes emerged. These tracks were produced in a unique way: they never existed as arrangements laid out in software on someone’s computer, only as a single stereo file, passed to and fro, and endlessly worked and tweaked and eroded.
Still early into 2010 The Tropics EP is a very different record and a sign of things to come: fresh, organic, mature, holistic, unified, and totally
