You might be familiar with one of them or maybe you never heard of any of them…but I think in a very short while everybody’s going to know what I’m talkin about. Daniel Lanois a Canadian record producer, guitarist and singer-songwriter who has produced albums for likes of Bob Dylan, U2, Peter Gabriel, Sinéad O’Connor, the Neville Brothers and many others has taken upon him the beautiful task to put together Black Dub. Lanois’ Black Dub features Brian Blade (Wayne Shorter, Joshua Redman) on drums, Daryl Johnson (Neville Brothers) on bass, and Trixie Whitley (daughter of the late Chris Whitley) adding vocals, keys, and even more percussion.
This eclectic set of musician produces a blend of soulful rock balads that will touch your heart as soon as Trixie Whitley’s vocals stroke your ears. I haven’t found a box to fit their music into yet. But who cares about genres when it’s quality music were talkin about. Black Dub is currently touring the US and working on something that sounds like a CD that people will listen to for years to come. Their first album is scheduled for release somewhere in the first quarter of 2010. But for now we’re going to have to settle for Youtube videos of live studio performances.
