On the regular … all Strange Fruit Music events are dope!! But this one … is the one I have been waiting for. Jesse Boykins!!
Chicago Born Jesse Boykins entered the mainstream music scene back in 2008 but his career started way before that. Jesse’s own musical creations began in the 4th grade. He developed a talent for hearing sounds in his environment and using them as a guide to create melodies that he would record on his karaoke machine.
Jesse ‘s influences are not just artists like Marvin Gaye, Sade and Björk but he is also influenced by writers like Shakespeare and Langston Hughes. Which pretty much explains why he is on point musically as well as lyrically.
At 16 Jesse was selected out of the nation to be 1 of 13 singers in the Grammy Jazz Ensemble, where he was discovered and later recruited by The New School University for Jazz and Contemporary Music. While studying at The New School University, Jesse crafted his skills as a writer, performer, arranger, producer and vocalist. He studied with classical trainer Kenneth Kamal Scott and soul artist Bilal.
Al that work paid of cause in 2008 Jesse released his debut Dopamine: My Life On My Back. His first single from that album, Tabloids peaked at #2 on the Billboard Video Monitor.
His follow up “The Beauty Created” was at least as impressing for he got noticed by and collaborated with contemporaries such as The Foreign Exchange, Theophilus London, MeLo-X, Machine Drum, and Phantom Lover.
Somewhere in July Jesse Boykins surprised me by dropping a free download by the name of “Way of a Wayfarer” . It’s basically Jesse Boykins’ sexy voice and slick lyrics over perfectly composed electronic beats that add instead of take away from the tracks.
