Even though 2012 is shaping up to be a wonderful year in music … I don’t mind looking back if it’s James Blake we are talking about. The British singer-songwriter, producer has come  a long way since he started his musical career by releasing a string of impressive mainly dubstep oriented EP’s from his bedroom. He actually started his musical career when he was in his final year at Goldsmiths, University of London where he studied popular music.

Well it’s almost 3 years since his first release … an EP by the name of  “Air and Lack Thereof” but I think it’s safe to say that after his selftitled debut album he has arrived. The album was, to say the least, slightly different from all his previous releases but was pretty well received nontheless.

I guess Mr. Blake wanted to show his ever growing amount of fans a little bit of gratitude when he provided them with the link for an unofficial FreeLP . The FreeLP can be downloaded from his Tumblr site and features live versions of I think every track on his album. kudos to Pinboardblog for providing us with the soundcloud stream.

Even though the whole release is worth while … track 14 “love what Happened Here”  is the one that really floats my boat.

Even though Chagall seems to be more of an electro pop songstress (something the Strangefruitmusicblog tends to avoid) … I’ve got this feeling we have to keep an eye on this 23 year old Amsterdam based artist.

Chagall’s EP officially dropped today and of course it’s available on iTunes. Since I’m not a big fan of snippets you can click here to listen to her debut release in full. The funny thing about this release is that the bonus track “Breathe” happens to be the banger and if you ask me this should be Chagall’s signature sound ..

The Carbonated EP is the last release derived from material from the Crooks and Lovers album, and includes remixes of the title track by Airhead and Peter Van Hoesen. B-sides include “Baves Chords”, produced at the same time as the Maybes EP, and “Flux”, written for the Carbonated EP.

Love this from beginning to end … “Untold Songs”  is a perfectly compiled release featuring all female vocalists who all sing their stories in different ways with music from various genres. Apart from good music you are supporting a good cause when you decide to cop this disc.

Big Up for Belle, the London based singer who selected all the songs for this album. She some how managed to make a perfectly smooth blend of songs and artists that might seem like a mismatch at first glance. If something seems vaguely familiar that might be cause she is not exactly a stranger to Strangefruitmusic since she was featured on the blog a while ago.

The compilation is being released in collaboration with Amnesty International and She Said 2 Much to raise awareness and money for Amnesty International’s “Stop Violence Against Women” campaign. Proceeds from the sale of this release will go straight to Amnesty International. Prior to this release a free download with remixes was provided and you can download that here

Taken from Skream’s 2010 release Outside the Box is the very dope electronic track Where you should be. While headnodding to this I couldn’t help thinking that there was something very familiar to the overall sound. Turns out Skream is one of the Magnetic Man who have earned a place in my heart by producing Getting Nowhere featuring John Legend.

For those not yet familiar with Mr Jay Soul. He is a music producer & dj from Amsterdam. Styles ranging from real hip-hop to afro flavored deep house, jazzy soul, broken beat, dusty disco, latin beats and more.

Mshini Wam by Spoek Mathambo was released about two weeks ago and is available for purchase on iTunes!!

The hype on the South African youngster however was there long before the album dropped. The two previous music video’s to the tracks Mshini Wam and Gwababa Gwababa (don’t be scared) had a lot of blogosphere attention.

Strangely enough the video your about to stream, however cool, got a lot less attention but I think that is because there are not many people who know the video to the track war on words is already out. This one is a little bit different from the previous two in the sense that there are more dramatics involved and the very tangible African vibe is kinda absent from this track. Personally…I dig but see what you think…

Magnetic Man is a live electronic music project consisting of dubstep producers and DJs Skream, Benga and Artwork. They signed to Columbia Records in February 2010.

Their first single on the label, I Need Air was released on the 26th July 2010 and kinda caught my attention. Subsequently they released the next single Perfect Stranger featuring Katy B and this one got me to nod my head and stomp my feet a little. Below you can stream the track  Going Nowhere featuring none other than John Legend and this one got me to write the post and allert you on their upcoming selftitled album scheduled for release on the 11 October 2010. More info and tracklist when you click here and to know why you need to check out the tracklist click on the audio stream below.

Andreya Triana – A Town Called Obsolete (Mount Kimbie Remix) by strangefruitmusic

Filed under: alternative, Download, dubstep, Electronic, music, soul

First recognized for her vocal talents on Flying Lotus’s ‘Tea Leaf Dancers’, Andreya Triana has also worked with Mr. Scruff, Theo Parrish, Mala and more recently Bonobo, whose critically acclaimed LP ‘Black Sands’ featured her on three tracks. She has spent the summer touring with Bonobo throughout the UK, Europe and North America, culminating in an unforgettable headline performance at the Roundhouse in London.

August 2010 will see the release of her debut solo album ‘Lost Where I Belong’, produced by Bonobo, which is already receiving widespread praise from critics across the board.

To celebrate this release, we are giving away a very special remix of Andreya’s latest single ‘A Town Called Obsolete’ by largely hyped producers of the moment – Mount Kimbie. Label mates of Joy Orbison on Hotflush Records, the duo string Andreya’s backing vox over melancholy pads like Christmas lights round the screen of a lovelorn mainframe.

The Ninja Tune XX compilation sees the release of a brand new Bonobo & Andreya Triana track – ‘Wonder When’ – and there is also an exclusive remix from dubstep pioneer Mala as part of the XX series. She will be performing solo sets throughout selected XX Events and an exclusive trio with Bonobo and Fink in Berlin and Paris.

Thanks to Sonic Router:

A busy couple of weeks for Hyperdub boss Kode9 then… he’s just spun together a FACT mix comprised solely of jungle records, he has a label showcase off Sonar next Thursday featuring Cooly G, Darkstar and himself and the release of his DJ KiCKS mix on !K7 is rearing its head later this month. I kind of get the impression he thrives of this kind of a ram out attention schedule and maybe its not just the mandatory ‘mpfree’ most labels seem to be offering up around the release of the album, but google will probably see a heavy increase in Kode related traffic when word gets round that the Dub version of the exclusive track he made for the DJ KiCKS album is available for the price of an email address over at the album’s minisite.

‘You Don’t Wash Dub,’ appears on the mix in this vocal-less format that is up for downloading whilst the single versio – due out early July also on !K7 – features long time Kode collaborator Spaceape on mic duties. Splattered with nuances and a bracing groove ‘You Don’t Wash’ benefits a touch from The Spaceape’s phrases, almost every one is coated by Kode9 in layers of delayed decay, sprawling his deep tones on into the depths; but the dub version loses none of its potency without them. Both versions are a unique insight into the mindset of the producer and given its summertime release date, the vitality and soca flourishes of its drum pattern it seems destined to mark a new territory for dancefloors, providing something light and vehemently danceable for the dark underbelly of bass music.

Africa Hitech – Hitecherous by strangefruitmusic

‘Hitecherous’ is the fresh EP offering from Steve Spacek and Mark Pritchard’s new project Africa Hitech.

Keeping the pressure on after the digital dancehall minimalism of Blen – which drew frenzied comparisons to everyone from Wiley to Basic Channel and Vybz Kartel – this new 6-track bomb will rattle more than a few rooftop aerials.

Preorder Africa Hitech – Hitecherous at Bleep

Vodpod videos no longer available.

‘How Does It Make U Feel’ pushes the sonic vapors of ‘Blen’ into a futuristic bass anthem, replete with bubbling 303 bass, sonar synths and Spacek’s commanding falsetto. Taking on the icy blueprint of Grime’s early, street-stalking strains and updating them with far more warmth and depth, ‘Said Speed’, ‘Lash Out’ and ‘Boingy’ are some of the most speaker-shredding tracks in recent memory.

Vodpod videos no longer available.Spacek returns to the mic on ‘One Two’, but don’t expect more futuristic R&B, that was three tracks ago. Back is the microphone-biting rudeboy of ‘Blen’, boasting and chatting over the sharpest riddim about some of the tougher aspects of London street life: “Nuff man ah carry bout knife / Dem ting ah end a man life”.

Vodpod videos no longer available.
The track’s instrumental version rounds out the vinyl version, but within the digital bonus of ‘Too Late’ lies another clue in the ever-unfolding pattern of Africa Hitech. Over a vintage dub and roots-inspired track, Spacek recalls classic UK Lovers Rock with his measured crooning and yearning lyrics.

With the history of bass music at their fingertips and their minds fixed fully on the future, it sounds like Africa Hitech are only warming up!!
