Owiny Sigoma Band by strangefruitmusic

In 2009, a handful of London-based musicians travelled to Nairobi in Kenya to collaborate with two local musicians: Joseph Nyamungo and Charles Okoko, who hail from a village up country called Owiny Sigoma. The workshop/rehearsals were a lot of fun and pretty fruitful so they set about finding a studio that could accomodate a 7-piece live band. The resulting four tracks made their way to Gilles Peterson who promptly signed the band to his Brownswood imprint and sent the boys back to Nairobi for another week-long recording session with Joseph, Charles and their extended musical family.

Music lover, record collector, DJ, broadcaster…Gilles Peterson did it again. In his search for the perfect beat he found sounds which in most minds are not related to the Balkan perse but when you listen closely you will notice the Balkan influence. Anyways he found it, mixed it up and made it available for the world to download and enjoy!! Gotta love ’em…

The Simonsound by strangefruitmusic

THE SIMONSOUND – Reverse Engineering (First Word) Comentários: The Simonsound is a sonic collaboration between Simon James and Matt Ford aka DJ Format. ‘Reverse Engineering’ is their tribute to 50s and 60s “space music” (the sort of Moog and theremin saturated music espoused by Raymond Scott, The Radiophonic Workshop et al) mixed with a mature B-Boy’s sense of intrepid exploration beyond the annals of funk and soul. We can find analogs for this style in the madcap mixes of Finders Keeper’s Andy Votel and Dom Thomas or more accurately the orchestrations of Barry Adamson, reflected in The Simonsound focus on original productions using an array of vintage equipment. Opener, and previous single, ‘Tour De Mars’ is a bit of a peach, recreating a Kraftwerk classic with psyche drum breaks and Moog washes, while elsewhere they cycle between soundtracky scapes ‘Inside The Capsule’, moody spy-funk ‘Hole In The Head’, bloopy exercises like ‘Bakers Dozen’, abstract martian floaters, and submerged jazz torch songs like ‘Between the Wake and the Sleep’.

Gilles Peterson and Fourtet pay due to Steve Reid (rip) by strangefruitmusic

For most of you  Steve Reid may not be a household name. But if you know songs like  Martha & the Vandellas’ “Dancing in the Street” , James Brown’s “The Popcorn” or Fela Kuti’s Africa One album then you ve heard Steve Reid’s drumming. Reid passed away on April 13 after battling throat cancer, but his legacy will undoubtedly live on, and Gilles Peterson along with Kieran Hebden (a.k.a. Four Tet) have created a podcast memorializing the legendary musician. Trading off between personal reminiscences of Reid and his recordings, the podcast is a loving tribute that all music fans should get their hands on—especially if they want to hear Reid’s and Hebden’s massive version of Derrick May’s “Strings of Life.” Download the podcast here.

Half Seas Over – Long Way (free download) by strangefruitmusic

Half Seas Over is a brand new project from acclaimed pianist Elan Mehler who, while working together with singer-songwriter Adam McBride-Smith on ‘The After Suite’ (Brownswood, 2009) discovered a rich vein of material in the melding of their compositional styles. Their partnership flourished and the two have written an astonishing batch of tender, richly cinematic songs, with moments of subtle revelation that draw on folk and rock music as much as jazz.

You can download the song long way for free on there soundcloud below

Bug – Cosmic Lab / 20 winks (free Download) by strangefruitmusic

Shook: 24 year-old Londoner, BUG, is a keyboard player, songwriter and producer. Under the moniker, BUG, he creates an experimental, instrumentally grounded style of music with a compositional approach. The BUG sound encompasses the finer elements of hip-hop and neo-soul, yet the real beauty is in the delivery. Think the smooth richness of the Dam-Funk vibe, the solid construction of a Dilla beat, the electronic wizardry of Flying Lotus and the soulful melodies of Lonnie Liston Smith’s jazz.

The debut single from BUG, Cosmic Lab b/w 20 Winks, is out right now via the newly formed Jus Like Music Records, and it’s absolutely FREE!

Brownswood number 5 will drop on the 8th of March. I think this compilation goes faster with it’s volumes then lots of other compilations. But the quality control is still there at the Brownswood headquarters. This time it’s a very tasty affair. I think even better than the other volumes. I wasn’t that sure about the volume 4. But with artist such as Ron BasejamElectric Wire HustleNailah and Shafiq Husayn you can t go wrong!

Expect some already known Worldwide anthems and some new and unknown stuff. To buy this compilation you can click here
